The 1997 Workshop is being held at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York. The hotel which is located on the shore of Mohonk Lake (elevation 1253 feet, 382 m) in the Shawangunk (pronounced "shon gum") Mountain region of New York, about 90 miles (145 km) north of New York City. The hotel is a popular destination for people escaping the city to enjoy the hilly and forested surroundings. This is an area known for its outstanding natural beauty, and early autumn, when the foliage is near its peak, is an especially attractive time for hiking and other outdoor activities. Guests can wander through Mohonk's 2000 wooded acres, and the Catskill Mountains are close by for further exploration. More information can be found in the New York Walk Book.
The Mohonk Mountain House is a resort, conference center, and national historic landmark. It offers tennis courts, a putting green, a golf course, a swimming beach, boats and fishing facilities, and miles of hiking trails. Smooth-soled shoes are required for the tennis courts, and flat shoes are required for the putting green. Hiking boots or sneakers are recommended for the trails. Accommodations are on the full American plan, with all meals included in the quoted rates. Meals start with dinner on the day of arrival and end with lunch on the day of departure. Sports attire is allowed at all meals since we have our own private dining room, and are not governed by the Mohonk requirement of formal dress at dinner. Mohonk does not have a bar or cocktail lounge; alcoholic beverages may be purchased at the Guest Services desk. Wine will be provided at the evening meal courtesy of the Workshop Committee and your registration fee.
